A dead dog lying in the gutter on his side, a large German Shepherd, totally stiff, his legs held straight out as though in mockery of the dead-animal cliché. A woman pulls a small child away, the child fascinated by the death at the curb. Good God, the woman says, sneering. The incongruity, the absurdity, the New York afternoon heavy as stone.

Here’s a link to an excellent site: Stereo Viewing. (Note that I’ve been talking about convergent pairs only, as distinguished from divergent pairs, which are also discussed on that page.)
Here’s one further suggestion: once you have some success with all this, you’ll find that it’s easy to block out the blurry side images when you view stereo pairs by holding your hands open-palmed just a few inches in front of your eyes, parallel to the surface of the monitor. Now, because your eyes remain slightly crossed, the left eye can see only the image on the right, and the right eye can see only the image on the left. The brain puts these two together, and there’s 3D space before your very---though slightly crossed---eyes!
